Once Julia gets off the train in Lonesome Prairie, one of the first men she lays eyes on is Parson Isaac Shepherd. Soon after, she sees her betrothed, Horace, a goldminer in desperate need of a wife: And Julia is it. He's paid for her fair and square.

There are other stories going on in this book, Isaac's best friend Milo's death and the seemingly unmending heart of Warren - Milo's stepson. The redemption of Giant Jim and the woman he loves, the same woman who killed Milo. Julia, an orphan herself, finds a "home" with Isaac's family as the Shepherd's family open their home to her while she awaits the next train to come through Lonesome Prairie. Meanwhile, the story centers around Julia and Isaac and a love neither one of them can deny, over and beyond the proddings of Isaac's friends and family who would love to see him have a wife.

The problem is, Isaac has vowed to the Lord he will never marry after his mother was killed by an Indian raid when he was very young while his father was working away from home. And then, years later, Isaac's fiancee Bethany was brutally killed in an attack. From those two incidents, Isaac decides he was not meant to be married. That's a vow he'll have to reconsider when he finds it isn't so easy to dismiss his feelings for Julia.

This was an enjoyable story I looked forward to coming back to every day. I found myself wanting to hurry through the subplots trying to get to the ending to find out what happens. But there was plenty of entertainment in those subplots as well, with each character shining on their own. Goyer and Fleiss bring an entertaining story to the table with this one and it is a book I would recommend.
